WELCOME TO FLINDERS QUARTET'S 2017 SEASON

Many music lovers speak of Schubert with honeyed tones, followed by a slight sigh. As a group, we think of Schubert so fondly. Performing three of his best chamber works in the one year is an indulgence we can't wait to share with all of you! As we turn our attention to songs without words, we look forward to telling many stories. Some with a new twist and some being told for the first time.

Carlos Guastavino was known as the “Schubert of the Pampas” and our very own Calvin Bowman is gaining a reputation as the “Schubert of the South”. Time to crack open the bubbly, it’s the perfect beginning to our Schubert celebration! It seems unorthodox, but a string quartet is the perfect vehicle to showcase three masters of song from across the globe: four instrumentalists in lyrical conversation.

Commissioned in 2010 with assistance from the Australia Council and dedicated to Flinders Quartet on their tenth birthday

FRANZ SCHUBERT  Winterreise (a selection) arranged for string quartet by Calvin Bowman
This arrangement has been commissioned for Flinders Quartet by Kaye Birks as a tribute to her husband, David, in recognition of his loving support over the last 50 years; and of their joint support of Flinders Quartet since 2006

FRANZ SCHUBERT  String Quartet in D minor D.810 Death and the Maiden

Each of these works tells vivid, fantastical stories. From latte drinking airheads to a little girl having a conversation with Death, the myriad of colours produced by the string quartet are the perfect narrative tool. Calvin Bowman re-imagines Schubert’s seminal work, Winterreise, with these colours in mind, celebrating Schubert’s ongoing relevance and influence in 21st century Australia.

Perhaps Australia’s most loved composer, Peter Sculthorpe said of his compositions that he viewed his whole output as one slowly emerging work. The same can certainly be said of Luigi Boccherini and Franz Schubert. Each of these works epitomises the canon of these three masters of the string quartet. In partnering with one of Australia’s greatest cellists, Timo-Veikko ‘Tipi’ Valve, FQ embarks on an exciting musical dialogue and journey.
