Schubert in the South

Review from classikON

FRANZ SCHUBERT String Quartet No. 15 in G major, D.887

CALVIN BOWMAN  String Quartet in two movements
Premiere, commissioned for Flinders Quartet by Julian Burnside AO QC

CARLOS GUASTAVINO  Songs arranged for string quartet:
El Sampedrino (arranged by Iain Grandage)
Vidala del secadal (arranged by Iain Grandage)
Romance Argentinos for two pianos, Op. 2, No. 1 Las Niñas de Santa Fe (arranged by John Rotar)

Carlos Guastavino was known as the “Schubert of the Pampas” and our very own Calvin Bowman is gaining a reputation as the “Schubert of the South”. Time to crack open the bubbly, it’s the perfect beginning to our Schubert celebration! It seems unorthodox, but a string quartet is the perfect vehicle to showcase three masters of song from across the globe: four instrumentalists in lyrical conversation.

Violins  Shane Chen & Nicholas Waters
Viola  Helen Ireland
Cello  Zoe Knighton
