DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet Cycle

Selected movements from the string quartets of Shostakovich, curated by Flinders Quartet with dramaturge, Richard Piper

The collaboration between Flinders Quartet and Richard Piper once again proves fruitful in this bespoke homage to the 20th century Russian.
— Night Writes, July 2019

In a unique concept, we explore Shostakovich’s life through a prism of his string quartets. Inspired by Wendy Lesser’s book “Music for Silenced Voices”, this program will explore the life of Shostakovich through selections from his fifteen string quartets, and follows his relationship with The Beethoven Quartet; his muse for most of his string quartet writing. Be prepared for something a little left of centre.

Violins Thibaud Pavlovic-Hobba Nicholas Waters
Viola Helen Ireland
Cello Zoe Knighton
Dramaturge and narrator Richard Piper

Such was the intensity of the finale that audiences weren’t quite sure how to react when it ended – there was nothing but total silence for a long time before it was broken by thunderous applause... With a mere four instruments that at times sounded like twenty, Flinders Quartet had given the audience an opening into the heart, mind and soul of Shostakovich.
