2021 SEASON

pink grey.jpg

Who could have predicted the events of 2020? We know you will have missed the transcendence of live music, particularly when it was needed most. The rapid changes to our lives and time out from performing have provided an opportunity for the quartet to reaffirm our love and commitment to great music and to try our hand at innovating what we do. Our motto has always been “caring for tradition, daring to be different” and 2021 will reflect our will to embrace the future while cherishing the beloved masterworks of our canon.

Some exciting new projects are afoot in 2021, including:

  • Our Margaret Sutherland recording project over two years

  • Mentorship of our chosen group from Musica Viva’s Strike a Chord national secondary school chamber music competition

  • Continuation of our role as Artistic Patrons of John Noble’s Quartet Program

  • An exciting second residency at Footscray High School focusing on the music of Bartók

  • Long anticipated performances at some of Australian’s premier festivals, including the Adelaide Festival

We have changed our concert times slightly to give you more options to hear us live or online. All programs will be streamed - stay tuned for more details.

We now have two concert times at the Melbourne Recital Centre Primrose Potter Salon: 11am and 6pm; our Montsalvat concerts remain unchanged at 2:30pm and we are adding the acoustically sublime St John’s in Flinders, on the Mornington Peninsula.

We want to take this opportunity to send a big musical hug to everyone and to let you know that we will have many opportunities for you to experience the wonder of the string quartet canon in addition to those exciting live, ‘in person’ performances, which we will never take for granted again. We look forward to sharing live streamed concerts, online performance content on demand, as well as new studio recordings.

Thibaud, Zoe, Wilma and Helen

PROGRAM 1 • MAY 2021
FQ Clifford Hocking AM memorial concert

We are honoured to remember Clifford Hocking AM and his profound contribution to the arts in this country. Clifford first heard us in 2004 and championed our desire to become a professional string quartet based in Melbourne. His support and subsequent grant through the Harold Mitchell Foundation was instrumental in giving us the time we needed to develop as a string quartet at a crucial time. His legacy as a man who was incredibly intelligent about all matters musical with a desire to champion great music is one that we celebrate in this concert.

PROGRAM 70 mins, no interval

BÉLA BARTÓK Selected movements from Bartók’s six string quartets
BÉLA BARTÓK
String Quartet No. 5

with guest artist, Richard Piper

Peter Bartók’s illuminating memoir of his father, Béla, inspired us to delve deeper into the musical portrait of this enigmatic man. Bartók’s fascination with folk melodies and their assimilation into “classical” music is well known, but what about the other elements of his life? The sense of displacement after he fled Hungary to America, the intense discipline with which he lived his life? Through anecdotes and letters, Richard Piper (who was the brilliant dramaturge on our “Puck’s Dream” and Shostakovich projects) helps us unearth some personal meaning behind the seminal canon of Bartók’s six string quartets.
