FRANZ SCHUBERT Quartettsatz

DEREK BROOKES String Quartet No. 1 (2018 FQ Composer Development Program participant)

ANTON WEBERN Six Bagatelles for string quartet, Op. 9

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN String Quartet No. 13 in B flat major, Op. 130

“Satisfyingly epic” is the best way to describe Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 130, while Schubert’s singular movement Quartettsatz is a tantalising episode. In this exploration between macro and micro, we interplay scale and form in a thought-provoking and moving curation. On discovering Derek Brookes through our Composer Development Program in 2018, we immediately thought to pair his first string quartet with Webern’s Six Bagatelles. Brookes’ composition is based on stunning haiku text and to accentuate this innovative pairing, we thought to use the fleeting sounds of Webern’s Six Bagatelles as a catalyst for the creation of new haiku poems. We hope you enjoy these wonderful haikus by our talented audience and friends!
