Matthew Tomkins began violin lessons at the age of 5, learning from Reiko Moritz and John Hughes in Ballarat. In 1987 he began advanced studies with Marco van Pagee at the Victorian College of the Arts.

While studying for his engineering and science degrees at the University of Melbourne, Matthew continued his studies with Spiros Rantos.

Matthew was for many years a member of the Geminiani Orchestra, appearing as soloist performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, and also was a frequent concertmaster, including their European tour in 1998. Upon returning to Melbourne, he took lessons with Mark Mogilevski, and in September 1999 was appointed to a position with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, with whom he toured Europe in 2000 and China in 2002. Matthew has played with the Academy of Melbourne and the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra as principal second violin and also with Australia Pro Arte. Matthew also teaches violin at The University of Melbourne.

Matthew’s interests, outside of the violin, include golf, soccer, cricket (actually pretty much all sports), cycling and barracking for Carlton.
